BEWARE OF FALSE AND DECEPTIVE ADS FOR IPHONE 17!

-Important contract details must be checked even when signing contracts online.-
Consumers are urged to remain vigilant against potential harm from false and deceptive advertising ahead of the pre-order for Apple’s iPhone 17, which will be launched on the 19th.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairperson Lee Jinsook) issued an advisory on the 9th, warning against activities that lure consumers with misleading information on device subsidies by certain mobile distributors, such as authorized dealers and retailers, during the pre-order period for the new device (September 12~18).
Some mobile distributors run false and deceptive ads claiming to offer new smartphones at low prices through sales channels on social media, or mislead consumers with unclear conditions for receiving mobile subsidies.
Major cases of harm include the following:
▲ Luring customers to a location that is not verified as a distributor through false and deceptive online ads.
▲ Non-approved online distributors activating mobile phones through URLs.
▲ Selling devices without clearly distinguishing between contract discounts and additional subsidies in the contract.
Other cases include delayed payment of the promised additional subsidies to customers.
To prevent harm, consumers must thoroughly check whether an online retailer has posted its Prior Approval Online Certificate when running advertisements. When visiting physical retail stores, they should also verify that the address matches the one shown in online ads.
Prior Approval is a system under which authorized dealers of mobile carriers grant phone retailers that meet certain conditions the authority to activate phones and an official approval mark.
The KCC urged consumers to carefully review their contracts and installment plan conditions, the details and timing of subsidy payments, additional services, and the final contract.
Consumers who experience harm during the process of purchasing a device or signing up for mobile services can seek assistance from mobile carriers’ customer service centers (dial 114), the Korea Association for ICT Promotion’s Unfair Mobile Phone Sales Report Center (dial 080-2040-119, https://www.cleanict.or.kr), and other services.
